How to Care for a Phalaenopsis Orchid
Phalaenopsis, often called moth orchids, are one of the longest-lasting flower gifts you can give. With the right care, the blooms can last for weeks and the plant can flower again. Here is how to look after yours.
Light
Phalaenopsis love bright, indirect light. A spot near an east or north-facing window, out of harsh afternoon sun, is ideal. Too much direct sun scorches the leaves, while too little light stops new flowers forming.
Watering
Overwatering is the most common mistake. Water roughly once a week, or when the potting bark feels dry. Water thoroughly, let it drain completely, and never leave the pot sitting in water. Healthy roots are silvery green; mushy brown roots mean too much water.
Temperature
Orchids are comfortable in the same temperatures we are. Keep them away from heaters, air conditioning vents and cold draughts.
Humidity
Melbourne homes can be dry, especially in winter with heating on. Placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with a little water underneath (not touching the pot) adds gentle humidity.
After flowering
When the last flower drops, you can trim the stem just above a node (the small bump on the stem). The plant may send out a new flowering spike within a few months. Feed lightly with orchid fertiliser during active growth.
Why orchids make great gifts
They last far longer than cut flowers, suit homes and offices, and carry meanings of elegance and prosperity, which is why they are popular for Chinese New Year, sympathy and corporate gifts.
